Moderated Usability Testing

Moderated usability testing is a session where a facilitator is present, live, while the participant attempts tasks. The facilitator can ask why someone hesitated, probe an unexpected choice, and adapt the script in the moment.

The strength is depth. You can chase the why of a confusing moment right when it happens, which is invaluable for open-ended discovery. The trade-off is cost and scale: every session needs a scheduled slot and a person to run it, so studies are smaller and slower than unmoderated ones.

Most evaluative questions, where you want to know whether a design works rather than to explore attitudes, do not need a live moderator. Unmoderated testing answers them faster and cheaper, especially when the session captures enough signal to recover the why on its own.
